The objective of this project is to design a roof for a space frame of about 5 x 5 m. The three-dimensional structure is characterised by its lightness and speed of assembly, as it is made of hollow tubes bolted at the nodes. These are essential characteristics for a travelling trade fair stand. The client requires the roof canvas to be consistent with these criteria and quick to assemble and dismantle.
With these starting parameters, a square canvas is designed and fixed to the structure with perimeter pockets. Tension is then applied by lower jacks located at the nodes of the structure itself.
TECHNICAL BASE
A completely flat canvas was designed, without shaping the patterns. The width of the 4 canvas patterns matched the distance between the axes of the structure, so that the welds coincided with the lifting pins.
The patterns were sent for cutting without scaling, since the tension in the canvas was applied by raising the pins once the canvas was fixed to the perimeter. The vertical travel of the pins was only 70 mm, so there was little margin for error. If the structure had not been precise, we could have fallen short on tension.
The canvas was finally made with VIP FR fabric, with properties similar to those of Ferrari 502 PVC fabric, in white. The polyamide connecting pieces between the metal jacks and the canvas itself were replaced by black plastic end caps that fit perfectly into the geometry of the node.
For future collaborations, it was decided to leave more slack in the canvas so that it could be fixed at the edges more easily and give the lower jacks more travel.
