A coloured sky for the open plaza

Beneath a grid of tensioned triangles in shades of yellow, orange and red, light changes its character. The sun no longer falls as a single mass: it is filtered, projected, casting shadows and turning the passage through the plaza into a more pleasant experience. In a place designed for staying —waiting, meeting, sitting for a moment before the cinema or after a meal— the cover acts as a piece of textile architecture that organises the atmosphere without enclosing the space.

The triangular geometry creates a vibrant and recognisable roof, with a language that can be read from a distance and accompanies movement up close. During the day, colour moves across the pavement and façades; in the evening, the plaza takes on a warmer, more serene tone. The intervention does not aim to “cover” the sky, but to give it form: to offer functional shade with a contemporary and lightweight presence, consistent with an open-air commercial space.

The cover is composed of triangular modules made of PES/PVC membrane (polyester fabric coated with PVC) tensioned over a supporting structure. This material makes it possible to work with large surfaces while maintaining lightness, strength and stability, and also allows coloured finishes with good outdoor durability. The modular logic facilitates maintenance: each panel is part of a replicable and replaceable system without the need to intervene in the entire structure.

From the user’s perspective, the benefit is immediately noticeable: less direct radiation, reduced glare and a more comfortable plaza during peak sunlight hours, while maintaining the natural ventilation of an open space. In a centre of approximately 30,000 m² of total area, this type of architectural shading helps ensure that seating and circulation areas are used more continuously, enhancing comfort and dwell time without the technical solution imposing itself visually.
