The light that accompanies La Nube

CaixaForum València proposes a cultural journey within an iconic building, and at its core appears La Nube: a volume designed for family and educational activities, with an organic presence and an almost weightless character. In this context, the skylights provide a clear and calm light, without harshness, allowing the interior to be experienced with the same natural ease as an open space.

The intervention does not seek to stand out through the accumulation of elements, but through its effect: a more uniform daylight that softens contrast, supports concentration and makes the space feel lighter. The ETFE printing introduces a subtle filter over the sky, creating a luminous sense of shelter, especially valuable in a place designed for learning, experimenting and sharing.

The two skylights are resolved with printed single-layer ETFE, a material recognised for its lightness and its ability to cover large surfaces while transmitting natural light. The printing allows the modulation of radiation and glare, improving visual comfort without losing the sense of spaciousness. The solution integrates into the architectural ensemble of the centre —located within the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències— and supports the functioning of the space throughout the day.

From the visitor’s experience, the benefit is immediately noticeable: the interior remains bright, with a more stable and pleasant light for activities in motion, workshops and prolonged stays. The material also facilitates maintenance and contributes to a clean reading of the ceiling, consistent with the “laboratory” and collaborative character that defines the building and its distinctive spaces.
