IASO, a textile architecture specialist with over 40 years of experience, had the privilege of contributing to this renovation by taking charge of the central retractable roof—an unprecedented solution in Spain covering more than 5,755 m². This system ensures that 100% of the seating is covered, enhancing the stadium’s versatility and making it suitable for use throughout the year.
DESIGN THAT BLENDS INNOVATION AND TRADITION
The project was led by the architecture firms L35 Architects, GMP Architekten and Ribas & Ribas Arquitectos, winners of the international competition launched in 2013. Their goal was to modernise the stadium without losing its historic essence. The combination of advanced technology and respect for the club’s tradition has resulted in a design that redefines the spectator experience.
IASO’S RETRACTABLE ROOF
The central retractable roof, designed and installed by IASO, consists of 10 ePTFE textile membrane cushions divided into two sections, North and South. These structures, supported by composite and steel trusses, can be opened and closed in under 15 minutes. The system not only protects against adverse weather but also provides thermal insulation and structural lightness, maximising the stadium’s energy efficiency.
A MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
The Santiago Bernabéu has become much more than a stadium. With the ability to host sports events, concerts, conferences, and exhibitions, it now serves as a multifunctional entertainment venue. Recent events such as Taylor Swift concerts and K-Pop festivals have showcased the stadium’s versatility and its appeal to global audiences.
SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT
The new Bernabéu benefits not only Real Madrid but also the local economy. In 2024, revenues from non-sporting events were estimated to have increased by 40% compared to 2019, generating approximately €1 billion. Moreover, the stadium has revitalised its surrounding area, attracting businesses, tourism, and international events.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AT THE SERVICE OF SPECTATORS
The stadium features cutting-edge technology, including the Hypogeum system, which stores the natural grass pitch underground, and a 360º video scoreboard that redefines the audiovisual experience for spectators. High-speed Wi-Fi, electronic payment systems, and premium hospitality areas complement these innovations.
