Designed to evoke a spaceship anchored on the shores of the Baltic Sea, the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg (formerly known as Zenit Arena) features a retractable ETFE dome that redefines the relationship between natural light and climate comfort. IASO participated in the project by supplying and installing the 96 cushions that comprise both the fixed and retractable roofs: a system that enables football to be played at temperatures as low as -10°C and allows summer events to be held under the open sky.
TECHNICAL AND FUNCTIONAL INNOVATION
The roof combines a fixed section and a mobile one with pneumatic cushions that maintain stable internal pressure thanks to constant monitoring systems. A system of rails and motorised carriages allows the 13,000 m² mobile roof to open or close in under 20 minutes, ensuring a stable microclimate during Saint Petersburg’s harsh winters.
DESIGN, SUSTAINABILITY AND VISUAL IMPACT
ETFE provides a futuristic aesthetic aligned with Kisho Kurokawa’s vision, and offers a self-cleaning performance that minimises maintenance. Its durability (over 25 years) and 100% recyclability help reduce the environmental footprint. At night, the membrane acts as a luminous screen visible from the bay.
